Basic Pharmacist Training in Diabetes Management: Focus on Medication Therapy Management

Six to eight hours of basic training in diabetes management.  You will receive hands on Diabetes Education and Management training to improve the lives of patients with diabetes in your community.  This course will give you the tools to improve care and conditions for patients with diabetes.  Learn how to market your services.

Cost is $180

Goal:

To provide an interactive, culturally-sensitive, comprehensive training program designed to equip pharmacists with the tools required to provide medication management services to a broad range of patients with diabetes.  Pharmacists can immediately begin to implement strategies required to effectively interact with as an expert in the area of diabetes. 

At the end of the program the pharmacist should be able to:

  1. Describe the current clinical guidelines for the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

  2. Describe the pathophysiology and pharmacodynamics of the medications used in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

  3. Provide medication therapy counseling and education to patients with diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and obesity

  4. Train patients with diabetes on self-management techniques related to monitoring the blood glucose, meal planning and exercise

  5. List the requirements needed to become a certified diabetes educator and how to achieve ADA recognition in DSMT/E

Topics to be covered

  • Overview of pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • Review of the current clinical management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes with a focus on the latest clinical guidelines.
  • Communication approaches and strategies to prevent acute complications (hypoglycemia and DKA), and to eliminate barriers and myths in diabetes including barriers to insulin therapy. 
  • Update on the diagnosis and management of microvascular complications of diabetes.
  • Update on the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular complications of diabetes.
